Domestic Violence

I do not think the laws are harsh enough and not nearly fitting of the crime! I am speaking out as an advocate for victims and survivors of Domestic Violence (DV)!

DV is not uncommon and it certainly CAN happen to someone you know! Domestic violence has different forms, but its goal is always the same: control through fear. Batterers abuse physically, sexually, psychologically and economically (control of car and money, interferes or dictates employment of partner).

Although there is no absolute way to tell if someone is being abused, there are some signs that should raise flags to outsiders so pay attention to the signs:

1. Injuries and excuses for these injuries – excuses that just don’t sound right, out of character, or just plain ridiculous.
2. Absences from work, school, or other functions the person normally attends – usually followed by excuses.
3. Low self-esteem – always critical of self, very defensive of their partner, blames self for everything
4. Changes in personality – extreme changes such as a very spirited person suddenly never talking, or lowering their head when speaking
5. Fear – afraid their partner is going to get angry if they are not home by a certain time or if things are not done a specific way
6. Accusations of being unfaithful – partner accuses them of having affairs with everyone, regardless of gender.
